    Question Time Map Idea?

The below quick draft idea I made shows the location of two objects but at different locations in time.

Coincidentally, Jon Roberts just pushed this map on his Facebook page: http://www.fantasticmaps.com/2011/09...he-ice-bridge/

There was also a notion someone had a while back about animated maps showing changing borders over time. We called it "Expansimation."

Certainly an interesting concept, as anything to do with time is. It seems like something that could be approached in various ways, like with the animated map you noted and the map you linked to. I guess similar to the one you linked to are slightly more subtle explorations of time within a map such as in Tonnichiwa's Lite Challenge entry http://www.cartographersguild.com/at...5&d=1456390869.

Because it's something that changes, it would certainly be difficult to capture in a still image in other ways than the Midgard mentioned. The only other way I can think of is (and something I was thinking of doing at some point) would be a map say of a building, that as you go across, connects but shows it through diffierent times ie. going from left to right: grasslands (before built), construction walls, build up, extensions, starting to fade, going into ruins, ruins, gone. Given the great ideas on here, someone may have done something similar (though it's sometimes so hard to search), who knows, but it's something I'd like to give a go at.

There's probably some other approaches I really haven't thought of, but it will be interesting to see if you go somewhere with this.

I think this would make a very unique challenge here at the guild.

Charles Minards Map of Napoleon's march, has been declared one of the best INFOGRAPHICS of all time by Edward Tufte. It visually depicts the reduction of his troop size as he march from Russian and back during the winter, decimating his troops from 422,000 to 10,000. The map isn't all that detailed but has enough information to be effective.

Also Battle Maps show troop movements through the use of graphically elements.

Sequencial MULTIPLES can show change (a series of maps all same format/size - that then compares the differences)

Color overlays (transparencies) can be employed to show passage of time.

Here are a couple website on the topic.

This sorta crosses over with a challenge suggestion posted by LordEntrails a week or two back. If you like the idea, you an always give it a vote, or leave a comment with your thoughts.
